Escala PL1650R-L
Innovative, modular and
economic AIX™ and Linux midrange
systems

 |
A new system concept that shakes-up the mid-range server landscape via an
innovative modular building block approach:
- Outstanding performance and flexible scalability
- Dynamic micro-partitioning and Power Architecture™ capabilities facilitate
highly efficient systems utilisation
- Introducing the innovative “Quad Core Chip Module” technology for an even
lower entry price point, higher density and industry leading price/performance
ratio
|
Based on POWER5+™
processors with simultaneous multithreading
(SMT) and a unique scalable,
building block packaging, the Escala
PL1650 Series servers are well suited for
server consolidation projects, database
and application serving, e-commerce and
departmental or regional server
deployment.
Modular building-block provides flexible
scalability
Escala PL1650 Series servers are
packaged in building-block modules. Each
module can support 4 (PL1650 R) or 8 (PL1650 R-L) processors along with memory, media, disks, I/O adapters,
power and cooling to create a balanced high performance rack-mount system. Building-block modules are connected by a
unique cabling system at full bus speed.
Up to four modules can be integrated with
the Escala PL1650R (two modules for the Escala PL1650R-L) into a single symmetric
multiprocessor server.
Customers can cost-effectively build systems
sized specifically for their processing needs
by providing the infrastructure, such as power, cooling and rack space, to support the number of modules required.
Because the building-block architecture
enables customers to scale-out not only
processing power, but also memory, internal storage and I/O capacity, the Escala PL1650 Series can provide
tremendous capacity and flexibility for seamless application growth as computing demands increase.
Outstanding Consolidation and Workload
management capabilities
The Escala PL1650 Series provides
innovations like micro-partitioning which
allows businesses to increase system
utilisation while helping to ensure that applications continue to get the resources they need. A single PL1650R model can
host as many as 160 “virtual servers” (micro-partitions). The shared processor pool allows for automatic non-disruptive
balancing of processing power between
partitions assigned to the shared pool - resulting in increased throughput and utilisation.
Breakthroughs like the virtual I/O, which allows the sharing of expensive disk drives, communications adapters and Fibre
Channel-attached disks, drive down complexity and systems and administrative expenses.
